Alberta TrailNet Society is Alberta’s provincial trail council, a non-profit charitable organization whose mandate is to support the ongoing development of the Wild Rose Trail System, Alberta’s provincial trail network. This includes responsibility to help implement the 2,987 km of the Trans Canada Trail in Alberta. TrailNet works with trail supporters, operators, provincial trail user associations, municipalities and the provincial government to support trail projects throughout Alberta.
Trails offer a variety of benefits to trail users, communities and the environment. Trail systems are formed from linked community, local and regional trails built through the effort and ingenuity of individuals, groups, organizations and communities across Alberta. Trail builders can access advice and trail resources, and may apply for funding (when available) from TrailNet. Trail users of all types can obtain information and maps to maximize their trail experience.
TrailNet was formed in 1989 and is governed by a board of directors that includes representatives from major provincial trail user associations. TrailNet is operated by an executive director and other staff and offers many resources ranging from advice and guidance for trail groups to producing maps and publications. TrailNet receives operational funding from the Alberta government, project grants from various sources, and additional support from membership and donations.
TrailNet annually recognizes a volunteer whose dedication to trails is exemplary through the Trailblazer Award. TrailNet has also received public recognition for its work on several occasions.
